I’ve been running for about thirty years, and every year has seemed better. On 21 and 22 February I competed in the British Master’s Athletic Association Championships at Lee Valley. To enter, you have to be 35+ and a recognised member of an athletics club. I am a member of Orangegrove AC Belfast, and I am over 35. I was entered for the 60m, 200m and 400m in the 80-85-year-old category. There were some very fine runners – world-class champions and record holders – so it was no walkover. I came 2nd in the 400, 3rd in the 200 and 4th in the 60m, so a silver and a bronze. It was a wonderful experience; all the runners were courteous and generous in their praise, and the applause was exhilarating. It is a privilege to be allowed to run with such beautiful people.
